The cook behind Laundry Day Takeaway is Abby O’Sullivan, bringing the taste and spirit of Southeast Louisiana to Burlington, Vermont. Abby grew up in a family of small business owners—from liquor and wine stores to candy shops and seasonal pop-ups—and immersed in local politics, with Sunday lit drops fueled by cider donuts and bottomless coffee. These gatherings shaped her love for creating community, and she hopes to echo those experiences through Laundry Day Takeaway—or, with the outwardly terrifying news in the world, she’s taken to the kitchen—hence our slogan: “Comfort Food for Discomforting Times.”

Abby carried this passion for flavors and hustle around the world while working as a costume designer in New York City, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, always learning from the ingredients, cultures, and cooks she encountered along the way.

In 2024, she returned to Vermont full-time to launch Laundry Day Takeaway, writing the menus and handling the cooking, blending classic Southern traditions with the seasonal Vermont produce she knows and loves. Her mother Jean rounds out the kitchen with her baking expertise.

Red Beans and Rice are at the heart of the menu, honoring Southeast Louisiana’s hands-off Monday tradition. Alongside them, Laundry Day Takeaway serves classic Cajun and Creole favorites like étouffée, gumbos, and, seasonally, king cakes—dishes built on rich flavors, time-honored techniques, and a deep respect for tradition.

  • Abby was honored to represent Vermont at the 2025 Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans, an experience that continues to inspire her cooking.
